• New California fee targets batteries in PlayStations, power tools and singing cards (signalscv.com) — A new statewide 1.5% fee on products with built‑in batteries is partly driven by a costly 2016 lithium‑ion battery fire at San Carlos’ Shoreway Environmental Center, which hiked local waste rates. The program aims to fund safer battery collection and recycling as California’s use of lithium‑powered devices and storage systems rapidly expands, raising fire and environmental risks.
