SAN LORENZO, CA — The Alameda County Sheriff's Office will host its 40th annual National Night Out event Tuesday, Aug. 1 at St. John's Catholic Church in San Lorenzo, with a free dinner hosted by the Crime Prevention Unit.

"Join us as we continue our efforts to enhance our relationships with community members and local businesses," the agency said. "National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

The nationwide National Night Out tradition began in a Pennsylvania town in 1970, and the annual campaign, intended to build police and community camaraderie, started expanding across the country in 1984.
