Christmas Day Fire Kills 1 Man

The victim's brother, father and aunt all escaped the house fire.

OAKLAND, CA — A 37-year-old man died after a fire broke out in his Oakland home on Wednesday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

At 6:15 a.m., firefighters responded to a call reporting of a house on fire at 3525 Oak Knoll Blvd. Crews began trying to extinguish the flames and alerted the family inside.

The victim's father, aunt and brother got out of the house. While crews were searching the home, the victim was "overcome and likely disoriented by the smoke and ultimately found unconscious," the department said in a post to X, formerly Twitter.

The fire was brought under control around 6:45 a.m. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The name of the victim has not been released.

"Our heart goes out to the family and their neighbors," the department said in a post on X.
