City Closes Parks, Offers Tips For Responding To Storm

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro parks are closed until further notice to ensure the safety of the public, city officials said Wednesday.

Local officials also provided tips to prepare for and respond to Wednesday's rain and high winds.

Weather service officials have issued a flood watch and high wind advisory for the entire Bay Area as a result of the storm.

City officials suggest checking drainage systems, such as storm drains, and removing debris to help prevent flooding. It may take storm crews several hours to respond to reports of flooding, clogged storm drains and downed tree limbs.

A rake or shovel can be used to remove debris from storm drain inlets. City officials suggest driving slowly and carefully if water has accumulated on a road.

Residents should stay tuned to local radio and TV stations for weather-related information. City officials post information on radio AM 1610.

Storm crews will respond to downed trees and tree limbs based on the seriousness of the hazard. Priority will be given to removing street trees from roads, sidewalks, homes, cars and power lines.

Debris and fallen trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner, but city crews will clear fallen city trees from private property. Property owners are responsible for cleaning up one of their trees that falls on city property.

Property owners should call a tree trimming service, their insurance company and utilities if necessary if a fallen private tree causes property damage.

Once local parks reopen, residents are urged to be cautious of unstable trees and debris on paths.
Residents can call San Leandro's Public Works Department at (510) 577-3440 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to report flooding or a hazard from a downed tree or limb, and should avoid calling 911 to report flooding unless it poses an immediate safety issue.

Residents living near a flood control wall may need to call the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District at (510) 670-5480.
