San Leandro To Host Household Hazardous Waste Event This Weekend

The May 7 recycling event offers residents a chance to dispose of hazardous household and e-waste in a safe, legal and responsible manner.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — The city of San Leandro will host the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program for a one-stop recycling event allowing residents to dispose of items they may have lying around the house that cannot be taken out with their regular trash.

The event, scheduled for May 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the city of San Leandro Public Works Service Center, 14200 Chapman Road, will provide safe, legal, environmentally sound collection and disposal services for residential household hazardous waste and e-waste, the city said in a news release announcing the event.

The event is only open to San Leandro residents who are advised to not transport more than 125 pounds or 15 gallons of household hazardous waste at a time. Waste delivered by businesses/for-hire haulers will not be accepted.

Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program also advised that containers should be less than 5 gallons in size. Boxes of waste should be placed in car trunk and remove all other items.

"Staff will ask that you remain in your car while they remove the materials from your trunk," the county said.

Accepted items at the event include appliances, bulky trash, e-waste, furniture, mattresses, metals and untreated wood, reusable household goods and tires.

Hazardous waste such as batteries, paint, motor oil, chemicals, light bulbs, etc., Construction debris, including rock, concrete and painted wood, propane tanks, gas cylinders and lawn mowers will not be accepted at the event.
