Lanes Reopened After Body Found on I-880

A dispatcher said reports of a person lying face down in the slow lane came in around 5:10 a.m.

OAKLAND, CA: The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian on northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland early this morning. The collision was initially reported around 5:10 a.m. on northbound Highway 880 near the Market Street exit.

A person was struck by a car, but investigators do not know if that was the cause of death, according to the CHP. Authorities shut down lanes of the highway for more than two hours while they investigated the death. All lanes reopened by about 7:30 a.m., CHP officials said.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a Sig-alert on northbound Interstate Highway 880 after a person was found dead just north of the Market Street exit. A dispatcher said reports of a person lying face down in the slow lane came in around 5:10 a.m. and officers were dispatched immediately.

The Sig-alert was issued at 5:41 a.m. and the CHP is advising drivers to use alternate routes. The dispatcher said the body had been struck by a car, but was unclear if that was the cause of the death. The CHP has shut down the Broadway onramp in addition to the number three and four lanes of the highway, as crews work to remove the body and gather evidence.
