San Marino High Boasts 14 National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists

Fourteen seniors from San Marino High School were recently named as finalists in a the National Merit Scholarship Program, which will announce its awardees in the coming weeks.

The finalists include:

• Kyle San
• Jonathan Sheu
• Emily Thai
• Chloe Wu
• Eric Yang

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)—a test which screens roughly 1.5 million entrants each year.

All winners are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. NMSC selectors evaluate various factors for each candidate, including: the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay, according to the program's website.

Merit Scholarship awardees can receive three type of scholarships: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and/or college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards. These awards will be announced from March to mid-June.
