12 Ducklings Rescued From San Mateo Storm Drain

Fire crews helped animal care workers retrieve a dozen ducklings from a storm drain Wednesday and reunited them with a worried mom.

SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo firefighters joined forces with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA on Wednesday to save a dozen baby ducklings from a storm drain as their worried mother looked on.

"We received a call from a concerned resident who has seen the mother duck pacing near a storm drain on Saratoga Drive in San Mateo and could hear the baby ducklings trapped underneath the storm grate, said Buffy Martin Tarbox, a PHS/SPCA spokesperson. "The Fire Department removed the storm grate and our staff were able to safely net all of the ducklings, bringing them to safety."

The rescuers said mom did not budge during the operation and stood close as her children were cleared for injuries. Once everyone was accounted for, she rounded up the kids and led the caravan into the nearby bushes.
