80-Year-Old San Mateo Driver Strikes, Kills Pedestrian in Belmont

An elderly woman was struck and killed by an 80-year-old San Mateo woman driving a minivan Friday morning in Belmont, authorities say.

SAN MATEO, CA -- An elderly woman was struck and killed by a minivan driven by a San Mateo senior while crossing at an unmarked crosswalk in Belmont Friday morning, police say.

The driver of the minivan was uninjured and has cooperated with investigators, according to the Belmont Police Dept. No other vehicles were involved.

The incident occurred at about 6:45 AM on Friday, May 3, just before Belmont Police responded to a report of an auto-pedestrian collision on El Camino Real at Fifth Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, an 83-year-old San Carlos woman, prone in the roadway.

The woman, whose name was not released by authorities, was treated at the scene by San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department paramedics and then taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver, an 80-year-old San Mateo woman whose name was not released, remained on scene following the collision and is cooperating with investigators, police say.

The pedestrian, who was using a walker, appears to have been crossing El Camino eastbound on the south side of the intersection, where there is no marked crosswalk. The driver was southbound on El Camino in a 2000 Toyota Sienna minivan, when she struck the woman in the intersection.

The portion of southbound El Camino between Harbor Boulevard and Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic until about noon for the on-scene investigation. Belmont PD was assisted at the scene by personnel from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
