SAN MATEO, CA — With hot, dry weather on the way and July 4 fast approaching, the San Mateo Police Department is reminding residents that all fireworks are prohibited within city limits, and violators can be subject to citations, fines, or even jail time.

Municipal code prohibits the sale, use and possession of all fireworks, including those considered "safe & sane," and officers will be out over the long holiday weekend actively enforcing the law, officials said Monday. Citations can carry $1,000 fines, and parents can be held liable for damage or injuries caused by children using fireworks.

"Fireworks pose an extreme fire risk, and our state continues to face an exceptionally high fire danger," SMPD wrote Monday. "Just one spark from a firework could set off an enormous blaze, taxing the already limited resources we have. The sound of fireworks also put many on edge."

Police said July 4 tends to be extremely busy for first responders, but reports of illegal fireworks have already begun trickling in. Residents can report fireworks to the non-emergency number at 650-522-7700 and avoid 911 unless there is a direct emergency. Residents can also file reports online.

Officers must witness violations to take enforcement action, so the police department will be deploying high-visibility patrols throughout the city. The city will also be closing lots at several city parks at 6 p.m. on July 4 to discourage fireworks including at Seal Point Park, Ryder Park and Parkside Aquatic Park.

Fireworks are also illegal in unincorporated areas, along with county and state parks. According to the county, violators can face fines of up to $2,000 and starting this year can be liable for costs associated with emergency responses.

Instead, officials recommend attending professional fireworks displays and celebrating Indendepence Day during the 4th of July in the Park event at Central Park.
