Cooling Center In San Mateo To Open During Heatwave

The Senior Center, which is located at 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. this Sunday and Monday.

SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo city officials have announced plans to once again open a cooling center at the San Mateo Senior Center for those who need some help escaping the heat.

The Senior Center, which is located at 2645 Alameda de las Pulgas, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 27 and Monday, Sept. 28.

According to the National Weather Service, the weather in San Mateo is expected to be sunny with a high near 87 degrees Sunday. On Monday, the forecast calls for sunny skies with a high near 92 degrees.

According to the city, the building, which will act as the cooling center, has WiFi.

COVID-19 safety precautions will also be in place, including requiring temperature checks, face coverings and physical distancing.

For residents out an about this weekend, the city reminds everyone to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid physical activity if it's too hot
  • Continue wearing face coverings when leaving home
