Fight Between Brothers Ends With Police Handcuffs
The wild case included weapons, a feigned illness, escape, and hiding on a rooftop.

SAN MATEO, CA — A fight between two brothers over the weekend in San Mateo escalated into threats with weapons, and police ended up arresting one of the combatants after a brief standoff on a rooftop.
The fight was reported about 12:35 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 600 block of Magnolia Drive, where one brother was reported armed with a knife, and the other with a gun.
Before officers arrived, one of the brothers was outside the home and the other inside. The brother who had allegedly been armed with a gun was detained on the front lawn, and the gun was later found in his car, according to San Mateo police.

The other brother was inside but no longer had the knife he had armed himself with, in claims of self-defense.
The brother found outside was allegedly the aggressor, police said, and he was arrested on suspicion of crimes that include assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a firearm and criminal threats.

The 23-year-old San Mateo man was taken to jail for pre-processing, and narcotics were allegedly found on his person. At the jail, the suspect reportedly feigned illness and paramedics took him to the San Mateo Medical Center.
While being transferred to a hospital bed, the suspect was unrestrained and took the opportunity to flee, with officers in pursuit.
He was found on the rooftop of a nearby home, where he eventually surrendered to police after a 10-minute standoff.
Introducing weapons into a tense situation is never a good idea, police cautioned in a news release about this incident.
"Familial disputes and domestic violence can become deadly when emotions are exacerbated, and it looks like utilizing a weapon is the only way to resolve conflict. There are better ways and resources out there to help de-escalate situations."
