Funeral Sunday for Man Killed in San Mateo Bridge Crash

A funeral service for a 23-year-old University of California, Berkeley student killed in a crash on the San Mateo Bridge last month will take place Sunday in Redwood City.

Jose Felix Mayen-Gonzales, a Redwood City resident, was driving a Toyota Corolla east on state Highway 92 when the car stalled just east of the high rise at about 7:20 a.m. April 24, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A BMW station wagon rear-ended the Toyota and was then rear-ended itself by a silver sedan, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

Mayen-Gonzales was taken by ambulance to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he died the next day, according to Montiel.

It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, Montiel said Friday, and no charges had been filed as of this week.

"Charges, if any, will be filed once the investigation is completed," Montiel said. "The crash is still under investigation."

According to InMenlo.com, a funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 5 at Crippen and Flynn Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City. The Family Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m., and service for all begins at 5:00 p.m.

A separate burial service will be held on Monday, May 6, at 3 p.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, located at the corner of Santa Cruz and Avy Ave., Menlo Park.

The Menlo-Atherton High School community is holding a Life Celebration for Jose on Monday, May 6 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the M-A PAC Cafeteria and patio. Mayen-Gonzales reportedly graduated from M-A.

Family, friends and acquaintances expressed their grief and condolences to Mayen-Gonzales's family on Patch.com's original article about the crash.

"To the Mayen family, my deepest sympathy for the sudden tragic loss of your beloved son and big brother. He would have such a bright future ahead of him, and now he is with our Lord, and his spirit is with all those dear to him. May he rest in peace," Patch reader Helen Canevari wrote.

"My prayers go out to you all. I've been blessed to kow Jose for several years as a Cañada student and he truly was one of my favaroites. I am saddended and grieve with you as this world has lost a bright light," wrote Margie Carrington, Financial Aid Director at Cañada College.

"We lost a great light on this earth but now that light is shining even brighter in the sky watching over us. it is so painful that we are apart now but one day we will be reunited and at least he is happy and at peace and knows no pain or sadness," wrote Jasmine Berk, who was Mayen-Gonzales's girlfriend.

"I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I had the privilege of teaching Jose and working with him. He was an inspiration," wrote Jeanne Gross, an ESL instructor.

"I am so sorry for your loss. I am one of Jose's professor's from UC Berkeley. I knew him as a thoughtful, hard-working student who cared about his community and loved his family," wrote Genevieve Negrón-Gonzales, a professor at UC Berkeley.
