Hiring Freeze Implemented By Bay Area Sheriff’s Department: Police

The sheriff's department has recently received over 350 applications, police said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has issued a temporary hiring pause as the agency attempts to go through the over 350 candidates who applied to fill the 31 vacancies, police said.

“This is a significant moment in our hiring efforts. While many law enforcement agencies are struggling to fill vacancies, we are proud of our recent success in hiring top talent at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Chrisitna Corpus. “After experiencing a significant staffing crisis, we are now approaching staffing levels we haven’t seen in many years.”

More than 350 candidates have recently applied to fill entry level correctional officer and deputy sheriff positions. However, the SMC sheriff’s office is currently fully staffed with correctional officers and there are only 31 vacant deputy positions available, police said.

Corpus said this is due to improved retention strategies.

“As we hire new law enforcement professionals, we acknowledge the intensive 18 to 24-month long training process our new Deputies undergo to ensure they’re ready to serve our community,” Corpus said.

The sheriff’s office will use the freeze to process the current candidates, police said.

The SMC sheriff’s office is still recruiting for nonentry-level positions.
