Man Charged In San Mateo 7-Eleven Robbery Linked To Other Robbery

The suspect held a clerk at gunpoint and ordered him to empty the registers, according to police.

SAN MATEO, CA — Authorities arrested a suspect in connection with an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven in San Mateo Tuesday. The suspect was also linked to another armed robbery in Sunnyvale, according to police.

The robbery occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday. The suspect, identified by police as 22-year-old Benicio Munguia Bustamante, was taken into custody at his Sunnyvale residence around 7 a.m.

According to a news release, Bustamante held a clerk at gunpoint and ordered him to empty the registers. He took a cash drawer with him, stomped on the clerk who was on the ground and then fled the store after he saw a police officer arriving.

Police arrested Bustamante — who made away with $1,200 in cash and $810 in cigarettes — after information from his girlfriend, who was also taken into custody as an accomplice and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime. The stolen items were recovered.

Bustamante faces several charges, including robbery and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.

Police believe Bustamante is responsible for at least one other armed robbery in Sunnyvale that occurred in February, and an investigation is ongoing.
