UPDATE: Off-Duty Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Burlingame Motorcycle Crash
The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon.
UPDATE 12 p.m.: An off-duty San Mateo County sheriff's deputy was killed Wednesday in a motorcycle crash in Burlingame, the sheriff's office confirmed Thursday.
Erik Mertl, 51, was riding a motorcycle through the intersection of El Camino Real and Bellevue Avenue when he collided with a car at about 12:15 p.m., Burlingame police Capt. Mike Matteucci said.
Mertl was taken to Stanford Hospital, were he later died, Matteucci said.

The driver of the car, a 64-year-old San Carlos woman, was not injured in the crash. She was not arrested or cited.
The crash remains under investigation by Burlingame police.
