Bay Area Man With Loaded Gun, Drum Magazine Runs From Officers: Police

The man reached into a bag carrying a loaded gun before officers tased him, police said.

SAN MATEO, CA — Police pulled over a car, the driver fled on foot and, when confronted by officers, he reached into a bag carrying a loaded gun and a drum magazine before officers tased and subdued him Friday in San Mateo, police said.

Jose Garciabarron, 38, of East Palo Alto was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of a concealed firearm, a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with prior misdemeanor convictions, and for possession of stolen property.

At 8:30 p.m. on Friday, officers said they pulled over a car driving in the area of S. Humboldt Street and 3rd Avenue because the car’s registered owner had a misdemeanor warrant outstanding.

As the car came to a stop, police said the driver, Garciabarron, fled on foot with a bag in his hand.

Police said Garciabarron stopped around the 1000 block of 2nd Avenue and reached into the bag. Officers said they told him to take his hands out of the bag and when he didn’t they shot him with their taser guns and took him into custody.

Police said they searched the bag and found a loaded Glock pistol with a round in the chamber and a drum magazine containing 36 rounds. Police said they learned through a records search that the gun was stolen out of Pike County.

Garciabarron received medical treatment and was transported to the San Mateo County Jail, police said.
