SAN MATEO, CA — A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a bicyclist in San Mateo last year, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Cesar Barillas-Aguilar was accused of the collision reported on New Year's Day in 2021 at North Humboldt Street and Tilton Avenue, where he ran a stop sign in a Nissan Altima and struck a 68-year-old man riding a bicycle, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

The bicyclist hit the Nissan's windshield and rolled off onto the ground, and Barillas-Aguilar fled without stopping. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital with a broken collarbone, broken ribs and severe head trauma, prosecutors said.

A witness saw the collision, and the next day police were able to track down Barillas-Aguilar, who admitted to the hit-and-run. A passenger who was in the Nissan at the time also acknowledged what happened, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Barillas-Aguilar pleaded no contest in November to felony hit-and-run causing injury and was sentenced to the three-year prison term Monday at a hearing in which the victim's loved ones gave victim impact statements, prosecutors said.

Barillas-Aguilar's defense attorney was not immediately available to comment on the case.
