'Mean' Customer Led To Peninsula Safeway Parking Lot Incident: DA

A Safeway employee was charged with attempted murder. The victim was "mean" to him at work, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.

MILLBRAE, CA — A Millbrae Safeway employee charged with attempted murder Monday on suspicion of running over a woman in the store parking lot was angry at the victim because she was “mean” to him at work, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.

Garrett Young, 23, drove a gray BMW SUV into the victim, identified as 53-year-old Gryselda Joseph, at a "high rate of speed" and then ran her over "several more times," according to the sheriff's department. Deputies later found the vehicle and Young parked in front of a residence on Henry Place, and they determined that he was the suspect, according to the sheriff's department.

Joseph frequented the Safeway and Young was upset that she was yelling at him about the women’s bathroom and other areas of his responsibility over recent months, according to prosecutors.
