Peninsula Rallies For Beloved Educator
A GoFundMe in support of a Burlingame educator seriously injured in a mountain biking accident has already raised over $200,000.
BURLINGAME, CA — A beloved Peninsula educator was seriously injured in a mountain biking crash earlier this month, and Dominic Bigue’s family has created a GoFundMe to help cover staggering medical expenses.
Bigue suffered major injuries in an Oct. 1 crash near Lake Tahoe, his family members wrote on the GoFundMe.
The Burlingame High School assistant principal was immediately airlifted to a trauma unit at Renown Hospital in Reno, where doctors determined he suffered potentially life-altering injuries. He underwent surgery the next day at the Nevada facility.

Bigue is expected to be transferred to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to begin his intermediate-term care and rehabilitation program.
Bigue will continue his daily outpatient rehabilitation at his home, where his family will have to make costly modifications that will allow him to live more independently.

“SCVMC is a Level 1 trauma center specializing in the intensive rehabilitation and care that will offer Dom the best chance to fully recover from his serious injuries and potentially regain mobility in his hands, legs, and feet in the long term,” family members wrote on the GoFundMe.
“Unfortunately, SCVMC is out-of-network under Dom’s medical plan so the family will incur significant costs for his treatment there. Additionally, there will be mounting costs for accommodating Dom for his in-home recovery period, continuing medical expenses, and any future rehabilitation and care.
“The thought of all of these expenses would be daunting to anyone in this situation, so we are asking for donations to support them through this most trying time. All donations will go toward short and long term care expenses to assist Dom along his arduous path toward recovery.”
Bigue’s GoFundMe as of Friday afternoon has raised over $208,000 toward its $250,000 goal.
