Police Will Hand Out No Cost Repair Vouchers Instead Of Tickets In This Bay Area City
Drivers in violation in this city will get their mechanical work paid for at a local auto shop.
SAN MATEO, CA — Drivers pulled over for a mechanical violation, such as a burned-out light bulb or a broken turn signal, in San Mateo can expect a welcomed alternative to the typical ticket starting in May as the San Mateo Police Department will be offering vouchers for a free repair at participating auto repair shops instead, police said.
“Lights On!” is a program aimed at building police-community relationships and has partnered with the SMPD to provide repair vouchers that can help reduce the financial burden, which leads to better interactions between officers and drivers, police said.

The program, Lights On!, has partnered with over 150 police agencies in more than 20 states. They helped hand out 10,000 vouchers as of 2022.
