SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A recommended $3.4 billion budget for San Mateo County for the 2022-23 fiscal year includes a focus on pandemic recovery, homelessness and social justice.

The recommendation, made by county executive officer Mike Callagy, will be presented to the Board of Supervisors during three days of public hearings that begin June 28, with the final budget adopted in September following revisions.

The proposal would provide $20.5 million for housing-related needs, $9.2 million for childcare grants for students who are socio-economically disadvantaged, $5 million to create small business and job seeker center in North Fair Oaks and Half Moon Bay, $3.5 million for public WiFi operation and maintenance and $500,000 for a pilot of a full-service community outreach pilot program.

“The economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic hit many of our communities particularly hard,” Callagy said. “This budget seeks to help put those individuals and those families – and indeed all vulnerable families — on a more secure financial footing by making investments in programs and services that lead to long-term recovery.”

Callagy’s proposed budget also seeks to add resources to help disadvantaged communities, provide funds to help complete the county’s first Navigation Center and finish capital projects that include: Revamping the San Mateo County Health campus and replacing the Cordilleras Mental Health Facility.
