San Mateo a Finalist in Rand McNally 'Best of the Road' Competition

The city of San Mateo has been named a finalist in the Rand McNally "Best of the Road" competition, with two weeks left for the city to earn the title of "Best Food."
When voting closed on Sept. 3, San Mateo had claimed 1,363 votes and ended the first round in a heated match against Walla Walla, Washington, the second place finalist with 1,349 votes.
San Mateo is the top ranked finalist in the Best Food category, and to win the competition the city have to impress the panel of Rand McNally’s judges with a video, a written narrative and social media activity.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 16 through Friday, Sept. 27, the community is encouraged to do any or all of the following:
1) Write personalized reviews of your favorite food-related experiences at www.bestoftheroad.com,

2) Post food photos via Twitter and Instagram to#SMBestFood, #BestoftheRoad, and www.twitter.com/SMBestFood
3) Follow www.facebook.com/SMBestFood for a fun daily giveaway competition where Facebook fans will guess the restaurant of a “Mystery Meal” photo and winners will receive a complimentary lunch, dinner, or dining package from the featured restaurant.
The judges will consider the level of engagement throughout San Mateo, so it’s up to the residents to highlight the many fabulous dining adventures throughout our community.
“It’s our diversity of restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, and specialty items that set us apart,” said Marcus Clarke, Economic Development Manager.
“San Mateo is home to 340 establishments catering to nearly every culinary craving from around the world. At every price point and in atmospheres ranging from quick take-out to Michelin rated establishments, San Mateo restaurants and food establishments aim to satisfy every palate,” he said.
The Rand McNally Best of the Road competition is an opportunity for towns with populations of 150,000 people or less to showcase the features, attractions, and amenities that make them great.
There are six categories including: Most Beautiful, Most Fun, Friendliest, Most Patriotic, Best for Food, and Best for Geocaching. San Mateo is a finalist in the Best Food category.
