SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days organizers named the winners Tuesday of the 2022 Bike Champions of the Year, which is awarded to one resident from each of the nine Bay Area counties for their commitment to biking as their primary mode of transport.
San Mateo County’s winner was Amol Patwardhan, who aims to help people incorporate biking into their daily lives and help reduce dependence on vehicles that run on fossil fuels.
Patwardhan bikes 14 miles round trip to work every day, and also uses his bike for errands and recreational rides.

“Friends, family, and colleagues who are new to biking often seek out Amol’s help on what to buy, safe routes to commute, how to ride safely, and more,” organizers said in a news release. “His wife introduced him to the world of group rides, where he would take sweep responsibilities and swiftly repair any flat tires.”
Each winner will receive several gifts, including a Lezyne Strip Pro Alert Drive from Mike’s Bikes, a Better World Club roadside assistance membership, a cycling cap and a laminated set of trail maps around the Bay Area.
