SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Over 93 percent of eligible San Mateo County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, as county health officials focus on the remaining communities and ethnicity groups that have under an 80 percent vaccination rate.

The number of unvaccinated residents who are eligible is 45,000, a decrease of 4,000 since last week, county health chief Louise Rogers wrote in a report. Over 81 percent of residents over 10 in the county’s lowest quartile Healthy Places index tracts have been vaccinated.

But the smaller communities of Broadmoor, El Granada, Loma Mar and Moss Beach all have a 70 percent vaccination rate or lower as of Sept. 19, according to the county.

“We are continuing to learn from partners involved in the outreach effort in these communities and are trying to get to more specific estimates of our remaining unvaccinated population since we know population estimates in smaller communities can be less precise,” Rogers wrote.

Rogers said that the county continues to focus on increasing vaccination rates among Black, Hispanic and Pacific Islander communities in which rates are below 80 percent.

As of Sept. 12, under two-thirds of each of the Black/African American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and multiracial subgroups had been vaccinated.

“While we get a better understanding of the remaining unvaccinated, we continue to provide targeted pop-up and weekly vaccine clinics to reach residents in these specific communities and leverage trusted community partners to promote vaccine confidence messages,” Rogers wrote.

The county is seeing an uptick in breakthrough infections, which is to be expected as more people get vaccinated, the San Mateo Daily Journal reported.
