San Mateo Shopping Center Crash Victim Dies

SAN MATEO, CA — One of the drivers involved in a multi-vehicle collision at a Peninsula shopping center Wednesday has died, San Mateo police said.
The person was among three seriously injured in the Bridgepointe Shopping Center collision, which was reported to authorities just after noon, police said.
The two others were transported to a local trauma center and were in stable condition as of Thursday, police said.

“While the circumstances surrounding the origins of the crash are still under investigation, it is believed that speed played a significant role,” the SMPD said on the agency’s Facebook page.

Officers at around 12:03 p.m. Wednesday responded to Bridgepointe Shopping Center on the report of a crash involving a pedestrian, police said.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a major collision scene at the north end of the lot involved three vehicles, police said.
The crash occurred at the north end of the lot near the Target store.
The shopping center’s west entrance/driveway was closed for several hours Wednesday.
