The San Mateo Slammer Green U8 softball All-Star team has a lot to be happy about these days.

Over the June 30-July 1 weekend, the team pulled off two "firsts" - a perfect game, and a 1st Place win in a tournament.

The team is made up of local 8-year-old girls. For that reason, said one of the team's coaches, Julie Nestor, the teams only play five-inning games, and pitchers can only pitch a maximum of three innings per game.

"But, the combined efforts of our two young pitchers, Sahara Daily and Erika Bagtas, pulled off this amazing feat," said Nestor. "They, combined, struck out 11 of 15 batters faced, and each had two put-outs from the mound to first."

Excitedly, Nestor explained that the tournament director confirmed that feat as the first U8 perfect game that they knew of, ever recorded.

"And, this was in the semi-finals against a very good San Bruno Storm team," Nestor added.

The final score was 1-0 with one of the Slammers Green, Alex Bunton, hitting a one-out double in the top of the fifth. Team member Kiana Ryan had the game-winning RBI.

The girls then went on to beat the Belmont Blast 4-2 for their very first championship title.

"It is a great thing that these girls accomplished," Nestor said.
