This South Bay Superintendent Will Not Seek Re-Election

The superintendent of San Mateo Schools that oversaw the county through the COVID-19 pandemic said she will not run again.

SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools announced Thursday she would not run for re-election, according to a press release.

Nancy Magee was first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022.

Magee was in charge of San Mateo County schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition back to in-person learning.

While in office, one of her focuses was to improve the district’s climate readiness. During her time, the San Mateo County Office of Education earned the Sustainability Champion Award and a CA Green Ribbon Schools Gold Achiever Award.

Going forward, Magee said she wants to finish the County Office of Education’s strategic goals, including aligning youth mental health support and services.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure every child, regardless of background, has access to the educational opportunities they deserve. This includes students with disabilities and those from historically marginalized communities. We must expand our investment in the social, emotional, and mental health of our young people,” Magee said.

Magee also serves on the First 5 San Mateo County Commission, the Housing Endowment and Regional Trust of San Mateo County, and the Big Lift Leadership team, which aims to advance the countywide third-grade literacy.
