SMC Event Center Tapped As Severe Winter Weather Shelter
Cypress Hall will have space for more than 50 people in need of a warm meal and a bed during very cold or wet weather.

SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo County Event Center has partnered with the Human Services Agency to provide unhoused people a warm and dry place to stay during severe winter weather.
According to county officials, Cypress Hall will open its doors to dozens of vulnerable people and families whenever the county activates its Inclement Weather Program. The program is triggered when the forecast calls for extremely low temperatures or a significant wet-weather system.
"People living without a roof over their head are extremely vulnerable during cold weather," said Claire Cunningham, the HSA director. "Adding warm beds at the Event Center can literally save lives this winter."

Beyond a warm place to sleep, Cypress Hall will provide visitors with meals, hygiene kits and emergency clothing. The center will not be open to walk-ups, and participants must first be referred from one of the county's eight nonprofit "Core Services Agencies." Officials expect most activations of the hall will last one to three days.
"Our collaboration with the San Mateo County Human Services Agency underscores our dedication to support our community when it matters most," said Dana Stoehr, CEO of the Event Center. "As an emergency management site, we are fully committed to providing a safe, supportive environment during inclement weather, and we are honored to open our doors in this capacity."
