SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office introduced a new virtual reality training system called the VirTra simulator, which is intended to aid in response to active shooter, domestic violence and other “high stress” situations.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is the first agency in California to use the simulator, which allows law enforcement to train in real-word scenarios and move between locations like a movie theater or courthouse. The simulator features five large screens for a 300-degree training environment, along with a 4K projector.

"We are excited to have this new training tool to help our new deputies develop the best skills and prepare for the field,” Sheriff Carlos G. Bolanos said. “This training is also beneficial to our current deputies and acts to keep their skills sharp and up to date. I am also happy to see that this will greatly improve our use of force and de-escalation tactics.”
