Police said a shoplifter punched a worker who confronted him before he was caught a few blocks away.

SAN MATEO, CA — A shoplifting suspect stole several items from a San Mateo Walgreens Wednesday and punched an employee who attempted to stop him, according to police.

Investigators said the man entered the store on East 3rd Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. and struck a worker who confronted him for taking items. The employee described the man to officers, and police said he was found just a few blocks away still carrying the merchandise.

Police credited the employee with providing a detailed description in helping officers make quick work of the case.
