Wells Fargo in Downtown San Mateo Robbed

The suspect remained at large several hours after the bank robbery.

The Wells Fargo bank located on Fourth Avenue in downtown San Mateo was robbed just after noon on Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a robbery at the bank, located at 100 E. Fourth Ave., at 12:05 p.m., San Mateo Police Sgt. Dave Norris said.

Witnesses said the suspect, described as a “middle-aged male” about 5 feet 8 inches tall and heavy-set, took an undisclosed amount of cash from the teller utilizing a note and wielding what appeared to be a silver detonating device with a red button.

The suspect was wearing a white T-shirt with a logo on the pocket, and a dark colored ball cap with what appeared to be a blond wig with a ponytail attached. He left the bank through the Fourth Avenue doors and was last seen on foot heading south on San Mateo Drive toward Central Park.

No one was injured, and it is unknown whether the detonating device brandished in this crime was real.

Responding officers conducted an extensive area check and canvass of the area, however the suspect was not located and remains at large.

During the canvass, officers discovered that the suspect was captured in a photograph as he used the reflection in a nearby business door to check his disguise. The photo is attached to this article.

This incident occurred on Tuesday, October 1st, at just after 12 noon, at the Wells Fargo Bank at the corner of San Mateo Drive and Fourth Avenue in Downtown San Mateo. The suspect may have been in the Downtown Area prior to this incident. The suspect is a middle-aged white male, about 5’8 with a heavy build. He was wearing a dark ball cap that had blond hair and a ponytail attached, however based on witness accounts, he may be bald or have very short hair.
