Wildfires In Santa Cruz, San Mateo Counties 99% Contained

Full containment, Cal Fire said, is expected sometime Wednesday morning.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA—The CZU Lightning Complex fires, which have been burning since Aug. 16 at various locations across San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, was considered 99 percent contained as of Sunday night, having burned 86,509 acres of vegetation, Cal Fire said.

Full containment, Cal Fire said, is expected sometime Wednesday morning.

One person was killed and one injured in the complex of fires, which were caused by multiple dry-lightning strikes. The fires also destroyed 925 homes and damaged 90 others, destroyed three multifamily residences and 171 commercial properties.

Eighty-eight firefighters were still working on the blaze Sunday night.
