Crews Extinguish Fire On Island At China Camp State Park
Firefighters had to hike in "a significant distance" and use hand tools to put out the vegetation fire.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Marin County and San Rafael firefighters had to hike in "a significant distance" and use hand tools to put out a 2.5-acre vegetation fire Sunday night on Jake's Island adjacent to China Camp State Park, firefighters said.
The fire, reported at 7:23 p.m. Sunday, did not threaten any structures, firefighters said, and no one was injured.
However, fire trucks could not get close to the fire because of marshy ground between the road and the fire, firefighters said. That necessitated the long hike and the use of hand tools to put the fire out at approximately 8:45 p.m. Firefighters said the blaze would likely have been out in much less time, had they not had to hike so far to it.
