Fatal Marin Freeway Crash Victim ID’d

Officers just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday responded to reports of a pedestrian walking on the highway, the California Highway Patrol said.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The victim of a fatal crash that shuttered a Marin freeway earlier this week has been identified as Carlos Rios, 41 of Vallejo, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers responded to reports just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday of a pedestrian walking on thesouthbound lanes of Highway 101 just north of the Spencer Avenue exit in Sausalito, the California Highway Patrol said.

Investigators determined a vehicle traveling in the No. 3 lane of was unable to yield or take evasive maneuvers to avoid colliding with the pedestrian, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“At the time of the incident, it was dark with no supplemental artificial / overhead lighting in the area,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

“First Responders were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived a short time later, who discovered a male subject unconscious and unresponsive in the travel portion of the roadway.”

First responders administered resuscitative aid before Rios was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained on the scene and was cooperative with authorities during the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
