Fatal Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Crash Snarls Traffic
A motorist was trapped in their car and died, according to the CHP.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — About five hours after a fatal collision shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate Highway 580 on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol tweeted early Thursday that two of the three eastbound lanes will remain closed overnight for previously scheduled road works.
The crash was first reported shortly after 7 p.m., when a sedan and a big-rig truck collided midspan on the bridge, according to the CHP.
The big-rig caught fire and the driver was able to get out, but the driver of the sedan was trapped and died, according to the CHP.

Further information on what caused the wreck was not immediately available.
About 10:15 p.m., one eastbound lane reopened after the bridge was deemed safe.

According to Caltrans schedules online at quickmap.dot.ca.gov, work is scheduled to keep two lanes closed until 5 a.m. Thursday.
