Fed Agency Eyes Marin Housing Authority Takeover: Report

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is threatening the takeover of a Marin County agency over its purported mismanagement of a 60-year-old public housing complex, The Pacific Sun reports.

Marin City’s Golden Gate Village is at the center of the dispute between HUD and the Marin Housing Authority, according to the report.

Living conditions on the 30-acre property have been described as substandard, with pervasive complaints of rodents, plumbing leaks and broken heating among other hazards, the report said.

The MHA has proposed a plan calling for the demolition of 16 units and construction of two new high-rise towers that would bring an additional 156 housing units to the complex, according to the report.

But residents are wary of the county’s plans, fearing they’re a smokescreen for gentrification of the predominantly Black housing complex, the report said.
