High Tides Expected In Marin County For Several Months
County officials are warning locals to look out for high tides that could bring flooding in low-lying areas.
MARIN COUNTY, CA — Seasonal king tides may flood low-lying Marin County areas over the upcoming months, especially during storms, officials announced Friday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted high tides in November, December, and January may cause roadway flooding in Marin's coastal and bayside areas. Storms could increase water levels beyond predictions, officials said.

A king tide, or perigean spring tide, is an exceptionally high tide that occurs when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align and the Moon is closest to Earth, officials said.
Coastal communities and flood-prone areas, particularly in Marin, face a higher risk of impact, officials said. Sea level rise is already exacerbating tidal flooding during king tides in locations like North San Pedro Road, Greenwood Cove Drive, Lucky Drive, Redwood Highway at Greenbrae Boardwalk, Marin City, and the Manzanita Park and Ride lot, officials said.

Marin County Public Works and Flood Control District are advising residents to stay alert for king tides, allow extra travel time, and avoid driving through flooded roads, as six inches of water can stall a vehicle.
Before storms, clear leaves from gutters, drains, and driveways, disposing of debris in compost bins, not the street, officials said. In flood-prone areas, test sump pumps, have sandbags ready, and know how to use them, officials said.
