Box Cutter Attacker At Marin Home Depot Arrested: Police

Police arrested a man they said threatened shoppers with a box cutter at a San Rafael Home Depot.

SAN RAFAEL, CA —A 20-year-old San Rafael man who attempted to stab at least four people with a box cutter and vandalize a vehicle in a Home Depot parking lot has been arrested and charged, police said in a news release.

San Rafael police arrested Eduardo Garcia Hernandez after 9-1-1 calls reported him threatening and chasing people with a box cutter in the Home Depot parking lot at 111 Shoreline Parkway.

Police said Hernandez threatened and chased at least four people with a box cutter knife. Two men escaped Hernandez by barricading themselves in a car that Hernandez attacked using the box cutter. One man ran to his car and helped the second one get in before Hernandez could reach them, police said.

Police said officers tried to detain Hernandez outside the store near the entrance, but he refused to comply. Officers were able to de-escalate the situation, and Hernandez finally complied. During the arrest, he spat on several officers. They said they found a box cutter on him.

None of the shoppers were stabbed or injured. It appeared that Hernandez did not know any of them and did not tell officers what motivated the attack.

Police said that, according to witnesses, a Home Depot employee blocked Hernandez from re-entering the store just before officers arrived. "The employee's actions likely saved other people from being attacked by Hernandez," police said.

Hernandez was booked into the Marin County Jail on charges including felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism.
