Industrial Building Goes Up In Flames

SAN RAFAEL — A building used as a machine shop on the property of the San Rafael Airport went up in flames early Sunday morning, the fire department said.

Firefighters were dispatched just before 5 a.m. to the airport, located at 400 Smith Ranch Road.

Crews discovered a single-story, sheet metal structure on the northeast side of the property that was completely engulfed in flames, the San Rafael Fire Department said.

The building appeared to being used as a machine shop for repairs and fabrication of parts and equipment, the Fire Department said. It did contain flammable and/or combustible liquids, an unknown amount of which had spilled. The hazardous materials response team had to be called out.

After about an hour, the fire was under control and crews had managed to protect two other buildings near the fire. No airplanes were damaged, and no one was injured.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
