WOODACRE, CA — Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, introduced legislation Friday to rename the Woodacre post office in honor of longtime Woodacre Postmaster Marylu Giddings.

President Lyndon Johnson appointed Giddings to be the unincorporated town's postmaster in 1962. She is believed to be the last postmaster in the country directly appointed by a president.

In addition to her work as postmaster, she also served on the Woodacre Improvement Club board for 40 years, helping provide public access to facilities like baseball fields, a toddler playground and the club's pool.

Giddings retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989 and died in 2012.

"She spent over two decades helping the Woodacre post office thrive, going to enormous lengths to ensure the delivery of mail no matter what," Huffman said. "At a time when the Postal Service is under severe threat, I can think of no better way to honor her work and remind members of
the community what the post office stands for and the importance of this institution for each of us."
