Marin Assessor Gets Top Marks In Annual State Audit

The annual state audit of the Marin County Assessor's Office found very little room for improvement, according to a new report.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The state agency tasked with monitoring the work of county assessors each year found Marin's performed among the best in the 2021-22 period, officials announced Monday.

The state Board of Equalization evaluated Marin's assessment roll and this month released findings that showed the county assessor had top-level compliance with state codes, posting a nearly perfect average in its tax assessments.

"I am pleased that this audit demonstrates our commitment to uniformity, fairness, equity, and integrity in the property tax assessment process in the County of Marin," said Assessor-Recorder County Clerk Shelly Scott. "I also want to thank my staff for their continued professionalism and dedication that has made this outstanding evaluation possible."

According to the county, the assessor's office staff handled nearly 105,000 assessments in the last fiscal year, totaling more than $90 billion in property, with the majority being residential homes. On the two measures the office is measured, Marin had nearly perfect marks, with errors totaling less than a quarter of a percent.

The rolls are how the county collects property tax revenues that help fund education, public safety and other essential government services. Keeping a high level of compliance allows the office to recover a portion of its administrative costs from the state.
