His police career began in Tiburon and he joined the sheriff's office in 2000, moving through all the ranks to chief.
Scardina takes the helm following a Grand Jury report that called for independent oversight of the Marin Sheriff's Office following policing inequities the body highlighted in Marin City, which is 23 percent African American.
"I know there's a lot of people in the community who want to talk, and we're looking forward to having those conversations," he said in a statement.
Scardina said he wasn't going to take the appointment lightly and that he knows that it comes with a lot of responsibility.
As sheriff, he will earn $251,825 plus benefits and oversee a department of 311 full time staff with a $78 million operating budget.
