MARIN COUNTY, CA — Birdie doesn’t know what all the fuss is about, but all the extra attention she’s getting these days doesn’t seem to be bothering her much.

The sheepadoodle pup with a social media following may not have the polish to compete at Westminster, but when it comes to lifting the spirits of first responders, she’s America’s Top Dog.

Birdie was named Fire Service Dog of the Year by Kidde, a residential home safety equipment manufacturer that held a social media contest to determine the winner. The company announced Birdie as the inaugural contest's winner on Friday, which was National Fire Pup Day.

She’ll soon be bringing the spoils of victory to the North Bay, which include a trophy and 10 pet oxygen masks (a $1,200 value) for her local fire station.

Birdie will also be featured on the company’s website and social media channels will be included in its fire safety materials.

“We are so excited to announce that Birdie won Fire Service Dog of the Year!” First Responder Therapy Dogs wrote on its Facebook page.

“While she doesn’t quite know why she’s getting extra treats and attention, she’s thrilled as well. We are looking forward to passing out pet oxygen masks to local fire stations, spreading the word about FRTD, and celebrating our Birdie girl. Thank you to everyone who voted for her!”
