New Oversight Committee Assigned To Bay Area Sheriff’s Office In This County

Supervisors will select members to the committee in the coming months.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — At the next Marin County Board of Supervisors meeting on June 10, the supervisors will consider appointing nine members to the newly established committee that will oversee the sheriff’s office.

The Civilian Oversight Commission was established in November 2024 as part of Ordinance 3824 to oversee the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. The Marin County Civil Grand Jury published a report in June 2022, recommending the Supervisors establish a sheriff oversight board.

There has been a high level of interest from the community after 67 people applied to be on the committee.

"We are grateful for the community’s strong interest in serving on this important Civilian Oversight Commission,” said Mary Sackett, Board of Supervisors president. “The applicants’ willingness to get involved reflects a shared commitment to fostering a stronger, more transparent relationship between the community and law enforcement.”

Five representatives from supervisorial districts will sit on the committee and residents of Marin County will make up the other four at-large seats.

The committee will oversee the sheriff’s operations, policies, review complaints and produce anneal reports on community engagement and activities.

After the appointment of commission members, the County Executive's Office will initiate the recruitment of an Inspector General, with input from the commission throughout the selection process.
