'Here And Queer' Pride Youth Art Show Opening Soon In Marin County

The show is curated by a Marin County student who is fighting to improve mental health for queer students.

SAN RAFAEL — A Marin County student and a local youth organization are partnering to bring an art show that celebrates queer identity Friday in San Rafael.

Youth in Arts will present the “Here and Queer: LGBTQIA+ Pride Month Spotlight Show,” with an opening reception 5-7 p.m. Friday at the YIA Gallery in San Rafael.

Eva Hellmold, a Marin County student, will curate the show and this year’s theme, “Break the Stigma Through Art, aligns with her current campaign to improve mental health for queer Marin County Students, “Break the Stigma (Rooted in Pride, We Bloom).

"As an artist myself, I find myself turning to paper and pencil to express my emotions and thoughts," Hellmold said. "I truly think this opportunity will help our community recognize the queer struggle and simultaneously uplift young queer artists."

The exhibition, which will be on display until June 27, features artwork and creative writing from young, queer artists in Marin County, offering a glimpse into the lived experiences of students in the local queer community.

"Youth in Arts is honored to host the Here and Queer spotlight show, a powerful testament to the resilience, creativity and courage of young LGBTQIA+ artists," said Taylor Buttrey, Youth in Arts executive director. "These artists are not only breaking down barriers, they're building a more inclusive and compassionate world. We’re thrilled to be able to highlight these talented artists, especially during PRIDE month. Ensuring that all young people, regardless of background or ability, have access to meaningful, empowering arts experiences is central to our mission.”

Youth in Arts provides arts education to Marin’s Special Day Classrooms and has offered inclusive learning opportunities for those of all abilities.
