San Rafael Boosts Patrols Through New Year's Day
Starting Wednesday and lasting through the end of the year, extra officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department will deploy extra officers to watch out for impaired drivers through New Year's Day.
The patrols are part of a nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign and are based on federal data showing more than 1,000 Americans killed in alcohol-related crashes in December 2022.
"The holiday season can be dangerous for people on the roads," the department said in a news release. "The San Rafael Police Department wants to remind the public of the dangers of driving impaired and to celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence."

Starting Wednesday, additional officers will be assigned to high-visibility patrols, looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officials reminded drivers that marijuana, prescription drugs and certain over-the-counter medications can also cause impairment and urged residents to have a game plan for a sober ride home.
"During the holiday season, we see families and loved ones coming together to celebrate, and our goal is to make sure everyone gets home safely," said Traffic Sergeant Michael Mathis. "Impaired driving isn't just dangerous; it's illegal. Let's make this a joyful and safe holiday season for everyone on the road."
