Fatal Crash Update: Driver Rear-Ended Mobile Construction Crane

SAN RAMON, CA- A motorist was killed in a crash with a mobile construction crane on Interstate Highway 680 in San Ramon late Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported to the CHP at 11:25 p.m. Thursday on the highway's southbound lanes near the Bollinger Canyon Road off-ramp. It was then followed by another minor accident.

The mobile construction crane involved in the initial collision was associated with an ongoing Metropolitan Transportation Commission project to convert carpool lanes between San Ramon and Walnut Creek to express lanes, according to the MTC.

A rubber tire crane owned by Independent Structures, a subcontractor on the project, was traveling in the highway's slow lane reportedly at about 55 mph when it was rear-ended by a black Honda, MTC officials said.

The Honda's driver, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office this morning as 43-year-old Carlos Garcia Zepeda, was apparently killed on impact, MTC officials said.

Another accident occurred around 30 seconds later, when a silver sedan rear-ended the Honda.

MTC officials said the female driver of the sedan appeared to have suffered minor bruises in the crash. Lanes on southbound Highway 680 were closed due to the incident but were reopened early this morning, according to the CHP.
