High-Speed Pursuit Led To San Ramon Shelter-In-Place Alert

A license plate reader picked up a car linked to a man wanted on a Florida homicide charge, kicking off an hourslong search.

SAN RAMON, CA — A high-speed pursuit took place Tuesday afternoon in San Ramon shortly before police advised people to shelter in place during an hourslong search for a man wanted on a homicide charge in Florida.

Reynaldo J. Sanchez, 21, remained in the Martinez Detention Facility Wednesday afternoon on the outstanding homicide warrant issued Aug. 10 by the Broward County Sheriff's Department in Florida, according to police and jail records.

Police also arrested Tiarra Steadman, 30, of Florida on suspicion of evading police, having a concealed gun hidden in the car, having a stolen gun and being an accessory to a felon, San Ramon police said in a statement.

Officers were alerted to Sanchez's presence when license plate readers in the city detected his car's Florida plates and linked them to a Florida warrant, police said. Police found the car half an hour later driving along Bollinger Canyon Road around 1:50 p.m.

Police stopped the car. The driver — Steadman — initially yielded and pulled over to the shoulder of Bollinger Canyon west of Albion Road, then sped off on westbound Bollinger Canyon, police said.

Police lost sight of the car as it drove at a high speed, but other officers soon found the car parked on Saturn Park Drive at Deldrin Court, according to the statement. Steadman was alone in the car, and officers arrested her, police said.

Officers found a loaded Glock 9 mm handgun in the car, which was reported stolen in Hollywood, Florida, in January.

Sanchez reportedly ran from the scene. Officials combed the neighborhood on foot and by car. A California Highway Patrol helicopter, Danville and San Ramon K-9 officers and drones were used in the search, police said.

The shelter-in-place alert was issued at 2:10 p.m. for people near Bollinger Canyon Road from Briar Oaks to North Monarch drives. Gayle Ranch Middle School students were held in class Tuesday afternoon past their usual 2:45 p.m. release time as police continued the search. Police distributed a photo of Sanchez around 3 p.m.

Sanchez was arrested shortly after a resident told police that they might have seen him around 7:45 p.m., about an hour after police notified residents that people in the area were no longer asked to stay inside as the search continued. He was arrested without incident.
