Major Collision That Injured Children on I-680 Turns Fatal

SAN RAMON, CA — A suspected DUI collision that injured three children and stopped traffic on Interstate Highway 680 in San Ramon this evening has turned fatal, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported around 6:20 p.m. on northbound Highway 680 near Bollinger Canyon Road.
A Toyota Camry with three children and their mother inside was disabled and parked on the shoulder. It was rear-ended by a Toyota Sequoia. All three children - including a 1-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy
and an 11-year-old boy - were transported to a hospital. The 3-year-old was airlifted by helicopter.

The driver of the Sequoia was also transported to a hospital, and later arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. As of 10:14 p.m., officers had confirmed that one of the victims has been pronounced deceased, although it is not yet clear which one.

A Sig-alert was issued at 6:35 p.m. as officers shut down traffic for the investigation, and to allow the helicopter to land at the scene. All lanes had reopened as of 8:51 p.m.
